For as long as I can remember, I have been treading water, barely keeping my head above the surface, afraid of what lies beneath. Only now have I come to realize that it is below the surface, in the depths of the unknown, where the beauty of life resides. I am ready to surrender myself to the unknown and drown in its beauty. After seeing students return to school today, I thought of this video. It baffles me how many students try desperately to live up to the popular mythologies criticized in this video. Mind you, the facades that many of us adults adopt are much more nefarious. Regardless, I don’t know what is more pathetic, the pretentious roles that many of us unwittingly adopt or the fact that I remember Nada Surf.
